Irish Rising Remembered

April 12, 2016 By admin

Irish Rising Proclamation Reading at St. Mary Cathedral, April 23

The Ancient Order of Hibernians of Austin are hosting a remembrance of the Irish rising of 1916.  Members and guest are invited to attend 5:30pm Mass. A reading of the Proclamation of Independence will be read after Mass.

On Easter Monday, April 24, 1916, a group of Irish nationalists proclaimed the establishment of the Irish Republic. A rebellion was staged against the Irish flagBritish government when 1,600 patriots occupied the Dublin Post Office and other buildings clashed with British troops.

Although the insurrection was squashed it rallied a nation to arms. Subsequently within a week more than 2,000 people were dead or injured. The leaders of the rebellion soon were executed. War was declared.

In 1921, a treaty was signed that in 1922 established the Irish Free State, known today as Republic of Ireland.
